To DIY or Not to DIY

We get it, there are a ton of self-building platforms out there and plenty of YouTube videos showing you how to do just about anything; so why not save money and build your own website? The real question is, should you.

Now we’re not going to sit here and say something like would you fix your own tooth or would you build your own house. Clearly dentistry has very little in the way of DIY root canals (and that’s a good thing) and building a house is… well yes, you can build a house with some know-how and elbow grease depending on the size of the job. But what we’re going to talk about are some important questions when considering to DIY your digital space.

Are you technically saavy?

Just because you can pull up an app on your iPhone does not mean you are technically saavy. What we mean is are you adept at figuring out programs. We have seen those that can troubleshoot pretty well while others need a numbered diagram to do the simplest of tasks. Be honest with yourself on which category you fall into because sometimes the trouble is not worth it. We can change the oil in our car… but it would take twice as long and may not come out as well as it should.

Size matters.

How many bells and whistles are you going to need? This is a very important question if you plan on going DIY. We have built websites for 20 years and rarely do clients come to us with the same needs. If you are going it yourself, shop for the features and determine if it would just be best to get something made just for you.

Not everything fits in that neat little box.

With the DIY programs you get templates, cool huh? Yes, we can use templates too but we have found that it takes a lot of crafting to get client content into a template. Do you really have all of the imagery to replace what was given to you or does your text fit in that nice little box you are editing. We have had plenty people come to us after attempting to go it on their own since it doesn’t take much to make a good template go bad. Have you tried a Pinterest project lately?

Couldn’t you be doing something better with your time?

For those entrepreneurs that can do it all… kudos to you! It’s a fine line to want to save money and to truly focus efforts on growing the business. Many of you are caught in the chicken and egg scenario. If you allow a Digital Marketing professional to get you going, you will have more time to focus on other important efforts. Something to think about.

There are many excited innovations being released all the time, and we’re all for it. Just know we are here to help when you feel like it’s time to up your game, or your time is better spent elsewhere.
